A tabla set comprises two drums: the small right-hand drum called Dayan and the larger metal drum known as Bayan. The Dayan is skillfully crafted from wood with a membrane diameter ranging from just under five inches to over six inches. In contrast, the Bayan, typically constructed from steel, is the more common material choice. Both drums feature goatskin drumheads and camel leather straps for pitch adjustment. The iconic black spot on tabla surfaces is a blend of gum, soot, and iron filings, contributing to the distinctive bell-like timbre of the instrument. Tabla is not only an auditory delight but also a visual masterpiece, captivating percussionists with its rich tradition.
